FROM THE ROAD: CHICAGO WINE BARS
Business travel wears down even the best of road warriors – delays, mediocre food and sleepless nights can all contribute to a less than enjoyable business trip. Fortunately hotels across America have been busy beefing up their security, fluffing their pillows and maintaining well stocked fridges to attract a most discriminating and loyal customer: the traveling business woman.
As for wining and dining, there are many hotels out there that still need some work but there are also many that are doing a terrific job of providing restaurants and wine bars in the hotels themselves or have tasty nearby options. When room service and the mini bar have been completely exhausted, it’s good to get out without having to go far.
For those routinely routed through Chicago, the city dishes up a great wine scene to match the generous portions and friendly mid-west hospitality. Below are some favorite downtown haunts (in close proximity to major hotels) where casual conversation, good food and wine can be found for the thirsty traveler:
Pop’s for Champagne
Pop’s new location downtown has breathed new life into a Chicago standard. A terrific champagne and sparkling wine program is the epicenter of the experience but they also offer a range of still wines and fine spirits along with small plates for grazing and dessert. Jazz can be found downstairs at night, a casual lunch spot and wine store is sectioned off for day use.

Eno Wine Bar
Location, location, location. Eno wine bar definitely has the real estate and a great wine program to boot. Encapsulated in the beautiful InterContinental hotel on Michigan Avenue, the space is modern yet comfortable with a knowledgeable, charismatic staff to tell you about the numerous wines served by the glass and guide you through the perfect pairings of cheese and chocolate.

Gibson’s Steakhouse
Steak is the name of the game in Chicago and Gibson’s gives you the classic steak house experience. A short taxi ride from downtown, the restaurant offers a more formal back room or you can opt to slide into a spot at the bustling bar. You can always find a good glass of wine, a juicy steak and a friendly bartender to chat up knowing that you will probably be back.

RL
Ralph Lauren rarely misses a beat and his restaurant is one more stunning take on refined equestrian style in the heart of city buzz. The bar is relatively small but cozy, with dark, shiny wood, deep blue walls, worn leather seating and a handsome fireplace setting the mood. The food and wine program is well tailored and a straightforward American classic – be sure to start with a glass of sparkling, riding boots are optional.

Nacional 27
Sometimes a girl just needs a good margarita and a pile of savory empanadas. Tapas galore and traditional big plates complements a creative and satisfying wine and tequila program. Nacional 27’s huge round bar and dining room offers plenty of dining options. If you so desire, there is late night salsa and meringue dancing latter in the week and a jazzy band trio on Tuesdays – be sure to check the website for updated dance and music schedules.
